Clitoria- the Asian Pigeon Wings

Scientific Name: Clitoria ternatea IUCN Status: Not Evaluated It is also called Blue Bell Vine, Butter Fly Pea and Darwin Pea. It is called as Aparajitha (Nil and Swet) in Sanskrit and Shanka Pushpam in local parlance. Nil- Aparajita Swet-Aparajita It resembles a female Clitoris, hence the Genus name- Clitoria. The blue color is because of its anthocyanin pigments called ternatins, hence the Species name ternatea. Double petal variant of Clitoria (not so common) The species name ternatea also refers to Moluccan Island of Ternate from which the earliest known collection of species was reported by Breyne in 1678. It is called Shanka Pushpi because it resembles a Shanka- a conch shell and it is said to be a favorite of Lord Shankara. Linga, the phallus form likes the Pushpa that is in shape of clitoris. Thevetia- the Yellow Oleander

Scientific Name: Thevetia nerrifolia or Thevetia peruviana or Cascabela thevetia ICUN Status: Not Evaluated It is also called Exile Tree or the Lucky Nut or Be-Still. The Genus Thevetia in the honor of M Andre Thevet a French Monk of 16 th CE who explored and collected the plant from Brazil and Guiana. The Species nerrifolia means hanging leaves like Nerium or Oleander. Scarlet Ixora- Flame of the Woods

Scientific Name: Ixora coccinea IUCN Status: Not Evaluated It is an evergreen ornamental shrub native to tropical Asia and Africa.  It is the national flower of Suriname. In Sranantongo, the lingua franca of Suriname it is called Faya Lobi - meaning Passionate Love.  It grows to a height of 4-12 feet with rough, grey branches. It has oblong, smooth leaves, which appear in pairs- occasionally in threes with underneath clear veins. The flowers are massed in heads of various sizes mostly as immense round trusses. Each flower is long, slender tube dividing into four spreading petals from the bases of which spring four stamens.
